How Meth & Fentanyl Projects Work in Montana
Montana law regulates the assessment and remediation of inhabitable property contaminated by methamphetamine or fentanyl residue. A person may not represent themselves as certified for this work unless they meet the Montana Department of Environmental Quality requirements.
Methamphetamine currently has a Montana decontamination standard of no more than 1.5 micrograms per 100 square centimeters of surface material. Fentanyl is now covered by state law as well. We follow the state requirements in effect when the property is tested and cleaned rather than quoting a fentanyl number that may be outdated before the project begins.
Depending on the property and how the contamination was discovered, the project may include an assessment plan, representative surface sampling, laboratory analysis, a written decontamination plan, controlled cleanup, clearance sampling and final documentation.
State-listed properties and owner-initiated properties can follow different administrative paths. The terminology is not always friendly, and the paperwork can feel like a second cleanup project. Send us what you have, and we will tell you what the next required step is.
For an active or recently abandoned drug laboratory, remediation begins only after law enforcement has completed its investigation and gross chemical hazards have been removed.

1. Project Review
We collect the property history, reason for concern, affected areas and any laboratory, DEQ, inspection or law-enforcement records.
2. Assessment and Sampling Plan
We select sample locations based on the suspected activity, building layout, likely contact points, airflow and HVAC configuration.
3. Environmental Surface Sampling
Representative samples are collected and submitted to a qualified laboratory for the requested methamphetamine, fentanyl or other specific analysis.
4. Laboratory Results and Written Scope
We review the results, identify the affected areas and prepare a clear cleanup scope and estimate. Sometimes the problem is limited. Sometimes it is not. The data decides.
5. Site Controls and Decontamination
We restrict access, establish the required project controls and clean, treat or remove affected materials under the authorized scope.
6. Contents, HVAC and Disposal
Contents, porous materials, appliances and HVAC components are evaluated for cleaning, removal or disposal based on the laboratory findings and material condition.
7. Clearance Sampling
After final cleaning, the required representative samples are collected and analyzed. Independent clearance is coordinated when the applicable Montana process requires it.
8. Final Project Documentation
The property owner receives the applicable laboratory reports, work records, disposal information and clearance documentation for the completed scope.
